Jersey Clipper arrived in Cape Town overnight to have her rig checked before continuing on race three of the Clipper 05-06 Round the World Yacht Race from Salvador to Durban. The riggers and staff of the Royal Cape Yacht Club were on hand to welcome the arrival of the yacht just after midnight on Saturday (November 12).
Clipper Ventures indextenance Manager Justin Haller is in Cape Town coordinating the repairs to ensure that the Jersey Clipper is fit to complete the circumnavigation. After the South African based rig manufacturer checked the rig, Haller reported that no obvious problems had been found but they are re-tensioning the rigging and replacing bottle screws on the backstays.
Jersey Clipper is hoping for the quickest turnaround time possible before heading up to Durban under sail. Jersey Clipper Skipper Mark Taylor and his crew are eager to go for a test sail on Monday (November 14) and as soon as they are happy with the yacht’s performance they will leave.
The reindexder of the ten-strong fleet is making good progress towards Durban at high speeds in strong winds. Westernaustralia continues to hold the lead, and the crew has managed to increase its lead over the past 24 hours and are now 93 miles ahead of second-placed New York. Durban is currently lying in 8th place, 222 miles behind westernaustralia
