As the skyscrapers of Singapore loom into view a race overview from a couple of our newcomers on Liverpool 08...
My abiding memory from this leg will be the heat and the lack of wind, the decks were so hot you could fry an egg and I was known to stand in a bowl of cold water while winching, particularly on the killer shift from 9 till 1.

During the lightest days we raised spirits with a fancy dress party,
and were treated to half a glass of wine which was much appreciated by the crew! The light winds didn’t just prove testing for the living conditions though and we all learnt a lot about getting every last 0.1 knot out of the boat. This proved important in the last 24 hours racing which saw an amazingly close race between ourselves and Victoria, and despite our very best efforts were very disappointed to be caught on the line.
Cruising through the Indonesian islands has been very pleasant these last few days but we didn’t escape Neptune and this morning were delighted to be smeared with the last few days left overs, absolutely disgusting but we all appreciated the safe passage and are looking forward to Singapore. Don’t know about everyone else but I’m booking into a lovely air-conditioned hotel with power shower!!
Cate
Legger Lisa here! My second week at sea can only be described as ‘champagne sailing’ with calm seas and hot, hot sunshine (the tan’s coming along nicely but pretty frustrating when you’re meant to be racing!). On a silvery moonlit night we were finally joined by dolphins, their silhouettes darting and weaving in front of the bow. And boobies, of the feathery kind, perched upon our mast one night.
I’m loving gazing up at the star-filled night sky watching the meteor showers, midnight sailing under the full moon and spectacular sunsets and sunrises that make the dreaded 3-6am watch worth getting up for.
How quickly you cope without a daily shower (thank god for wet wipes!) except, as Cate has already mentioned, when King Neptune himself summons you to kneel before him. He takes great delight in pouring rancid leftovers everywhere (and yes, I mean everywhere). Thankfully our arrival in Singapore means a welcome power shower to remove the ‘bits’ the bucket hasn’t. big hugs and kisses to
those I love and cherish xx
