And they’re off, or in Chinese chu fa te!

The ten yachts in the Clipper 05-06 Round the World Yacht Race crossed the start line today at 1530 hrs (local time) towards chillier climes on Race 6 to Qingdao, China. The fleet were bid farewell by Singapore’s Senior Minister, Mr Goh Chok Tang before heading out to the race start past the spectacular Singapore skyline.

Durban continued to work her magic, crossing the start line in the lead, closely followed by Qingdao and New York, however the Aussie magic ran a little thin on this start with westernaustralia.com crossing the line at the back of the fleet. The conditions were perfect with bright sunshine and a north-north east breeze of 15 knots.

It was a fiercely fought battle to be first over the line resulting in a tustle involving Cardiff, Liverpool 08 and Qingdao. With the fleet jostling for clear air on the windward end of the start line, as soon as the start gun fired, Liverpool 08 and Cardiff collided resulting in all three yachts being involved in protests that have now been lodged with the race committee.

Despite a slow start, birthday boy David Pryce, Skipper of westernaustralia.com, was soon leading his crew through the fleet after escaping all the excitement on the start line.

The 2,722-mile race north will bring plummeting temperatures, and the crews will be busy digging out their thermals as they prepare to kiss goodbye to South-East Asia’s balmy bikini weather.

The crew are fully fuelled for this next race after having a Singaporean breakfast of fish dumplings, curry and green jelly sweets. Cardiff Skipper, Conor Fogerty took the Asian theme to a new level by sporting an emerald green kimono for the race start to their second Asian port.
