Clipper Fleet leave Manhattan in torrential rain
The ten-strong fleet of Clipper 68s headed out from Manhattan’s North Cove on Wednesday morning after a five-day visit to New York City. The boats sailed in formation past the city’s magnificent skyline and the iconic Statue of Liberty before heading down the Hudson for the start of Race 11 from New York to Jersey.
The 3,070-mile race will start as soon as the boats reach Ambrose Light later on Wednesday.
On the eve of the crew’s final transatlantic race, there was an opportunity to enjoy the Independence Day fireworks, one of the many displays they have experienced around the world.
Friends and family of the Clipper Crews braved torrential rain to wave off the Clipper fleet as they steamed down the Hudson, pass the Statue of Liberty and towards the start line. The dock departure time was delayed 15 minutes to 09:45 local time due to the rain with all crews wearing full Henri Lloyd Gortex Ocean Racer gear to shield them from the downpour.
