JULES VERNE TROPHY 2005
ORANGE II ON STAND BY : BRUNO PEYRON PRESENTS HIS CREW
. The Orange II maxi catamaran and her crew are ready to go. The loading of supplies is over and all of the crew are on the spot waiting for the start.
. As announced earlier in the week, the giant Orange II is on stand-by and Bruno Peyron is waiting for a window in the weather to allow him to set sail on this new attempt at the round the world record.
. Orange II's skipper made things official by announcing the names of the thirteen men, who will make up the crew around the world. The final name to be added was the Swiss yachtsman Bernard Stamm.
. Altogether, the crew of Orange II have 171 transatlantic crossings under their belt and more than 21 round the world voyages.
. After a few final sea trials early next week, Bruno Peyron and his crew will be "configured" for the Jules Verne and their eyes are already gazing towards the Deep South.
The 14 men on Orange II
The final crew list for Orange II for this Jules Verne 2005 has been drawn up. Priority was above all given to the members of the Dream Team (the team that won the Jules Verne Trophy 2002), then to a few of the crewmembers present on Orange II during the 2004 season.
The fourteen men on Orange II for the Jules Verne Trophy 2005 are : Bruno Peyron (Skipper), Roger Nilson (navigator, medical officer), Lionel Lemonchois (watch leader-helmsman), Philippe Péché (watch leader-helmsman), Yann Elies (watch leader-helmsman), Ronan Le Goff (second, in charge of rigging and manoeuvres), Sébastien Audigane (helmsman, in charge of safety), Jacques Caraes (adjuster, in charge of video filming), Florent Chastel (second, in charge of running rigging), Yves Le Blévec (adjuster, in charge of overall organisation), Jean-Baptiste Epron (adjuster, in charge of supplies and logistics), Nicolas de Castro (second, in charge of composites), Ludovic Aglaor (helmsman), and... Bernard Stamm (helmsman, in charge of mechanics).

6.5-m mini, 18-m Open monohull, single-handed and crewed transatlantic crossings, a winning round the world race... In 10 years, Bernard Stamm has built up an exceptional list of achievements. There was however one area in which he had not yet expressed himself, and that was aboard giant multihulls. Bernard Stamm was supposed to be taking part in the Vendée Globe 2004, but his Rolland design lost her keel in the English transat. It couldnt be repaired in time, so Bernard was available. He is thus going on board alongside Peyron and his crew for the Jules Verne 2005.
Shore Team
The shore team is made up of Halvard Mabire (technical director), Gilles Chiorri (safety), Gilles Campan (shore manager), Alain Colléchia (Mechanics), Eduardo Valderas (weather unit), Marc Engelbert, Clément Surtel, Yann Le Govic, Benoît Hantzperg and Elise Bakhoum.
Records
- The Jules Verne Trophy has been held by Olivier de Kersauson and the crew of the trimaran Geronimo, in 63 days, 13h 59mins, since the 29th April 2004.
- The absolute round the world record has been held by the American Steve Fossett, in 58 days, 09h, 32mins, since the 5th April 2004.
How to follow the start
Orange II will leave her technical base (the Défi Franais Base in Lorient) and will head straight for the starting line for the Jules Verne Trophy, off Ushant. A motor boat for the press will be available to journalists, who wish to go on board and follow the final tacks of Orange II before the start.
A press meeting will be organised in Lorient on the day of the start with the presence of Bruno Peyron and his crew.
