ORANGE II IN THE SOUTHERN 30s

The maxi catamaran Orange II continues her great sail down the South Atlantic under conditions which still enable her to accelerate. In the same time, she draws a perfect curve towards the southern 40s. Located this morning by 29°50 S, the Giant is perfectly positioned to joint the front the team was chasing. They should join it to day.

In the last 24 hours, Orange II has covered 544 miles at the average of 22,7 knots. After 2 difficult days, in a strong sea, the giant is leaving this rough area and sails between 25 and 30 knots this morning. In a black night, she sails fast under indexsail with one reef and solent. Useless to say that there is tension on board. Under that kind of conditions, no error at the helm is allowed...

The course towards the South is perfect. The boat is positioned this morning on the latitude of Porto Allegre (Southern of Brazil). If all goes well, the island of Tristan Da Cunha, which is just on the course of the boat, should be reached tomorrow morning, after only 12 days of race! The Cape of Good Hope should be reached in three to four more days and the great run in the Indian Ocean will be able to start.

Bruno Peyron:
« This morning, we are right in edge of the small front which we want to join. We have to push a little the boat during the last 2 days. It was tiring. This night, winds were very unstable and every two hours we had a sail change to do. Finally we left this area and the wind is now more regular. We should sail like this towards the southern 40s. We are almost on the orthodromic route with a course around 135°. Therefore we make more gain over our virtual competitors.

We reindex extremely concentrated at the moment sailing at 30 knots of speed in the middle of the night, under solent and 1 reef. This is a perilous exercise. Fortunately the sea was quite smouth. Tomorrow, our route must rounds the island of Tristan Da Cunha. This is the greatest Albatross reserve of the world. After that, come the southern 40s. Cold temperatures, large migratory birds and Australes seas which will be our travelling companions. »
