Ellen MacArthur, the most famous woman sailor in the world, arrived at North Cove yesterday afternoon
at around 5 p.m. She came on her trimaran B&Q/Castorama.

Word of her impending arrival had already spread and the seawall was filled with well-wishers as Ellen navigated the entrance and brought her trimaran into slips S5 & S6.

Ellen had just finished sailing her boat down from Nova Scotia. She motored up the harbor because of light winds but paused to wave in front of the skyline. That's her standing by the mast.

Ellen has come to New York City for another attempt on the Single-Handed Trans-Atlantic Record. The record currently stands at 6 days and 4 hours and was set by Francis Joyon and his great trimaran IDEC earlier this summer.

This past winter, Ellen set the Single-Handed Round the World Record which had been held previously by Francis.

Now that her boat is at North Cove, Ellen will do some sponsor and media events (watch Good Day NY CH 5 FOX-TV on Thursday morning). Then she will go on standby for a good weather window to attempt the record.

You can read more about Ellen are at www.teamellen.com.
Also at North Cove, one slip over from B&Q/Castorama, is Sodebo, the record setting trimaran skippered by Thomas Coville. He is also here in NY to challenge the Single-Handed Trans-Atlantic Record. Thomas' boat is 60 feet while Ellen's is 75 feet. So even if Thomas does not break the outright record held by Joyon, he can still claim a record for boats of 60 feet or less.

Thomas arrived a few weeks ago and has been down at the docks the last few days working on new leeboards.

These are two of the most incredible sailing machines in the world and they are right here side by side in Manhattan! And with IDEC being here earlier this year, North Cove has had an incredible show of speed machines.

I encourage you all to come down to North Cove and see these boats for yourself. If you are lucky, you may also see Ellen or Thomas at work by themselves of with their shore crews.

What an experience it is to be part of this community and the exciting year at North Cove! This is one of NYC's greatest summers of sailing ever.

On a personal note, I had the privilege last summer of being the final person to shake Ellen's hand before she departed for her first attempt on the Trans-Atlantic Record. She missed the record by just a few hours. Today, I was fortunate to be the first person to shake her hand as she arrived again in the Big Apple. "Welcome to great city of New York ," I said. "And thank you very much for bringing your boat to our North Cove community."
