SIR ROBIN KNOX JOHNSTON BACK ON THE RACE TRACK

At 1425 Spanish local time Sir Robin Knox Johnston onboard the Open 60 Saga Insurance roared back into action. With a North Easterly wind steadily building from 10 knots to 20 knots, Saga Insurance with a full index hoisted, charged elegantly back onto the race track while the Spanish sun blazed overhead.

" I can't wait to get back into the race. I need to get back on the track before Unai and Dalton make to much headway. See you all in Fremantle." Said Sir Robin beaming from ear to ear. " We took our time with the repairs because it was of paramount importance to make sure that we got it right and we have now so it's time to start racing again.
Saga Insurance slipped the dockside of the La Marina Darsena, La Coruna at 1203 Spanish time and headed out to the point where Sir Robin switched on his engine some 70 hours earlier. According to the race rules in order to take assistance Sir Robin incurred a minimum stop of 48 hours in order to fix the damage incurred in the storm, where Saga Insurance was battered in hurricance force winds gusting up to 72 knots.

Meanwhile back in this race; early this morning, race leader Bernard Stamm made a decisive bear away to keep his reaching speed on Cheminées Poujoulat at 15 knots and is now heading south-east, 180 miles west of Tenerife in the Canary Islands. Kojiro Shiraishi took Spirit of Yukoh close to Madeira last night, but is now 60 miles south of the island, keeping pace with Stamm.

As Alex Thomson predicted yesterday, Mike Golding has pulled away slightly from Hugo Boss and Ecover is currently 64 miles ahead as the pair reach parallel to the coast of Portugal with Thomson closer to the coast, 90 miles west of Lisbon. Tonight, both Golding and Thomson will be at the same latitude as the Straits of Gibraltar, racing through the busy commercial shipping lanes at the entrance to the Mediterranean.

On Friday morning, Unai Basurko and Graham Dalton started racing from Bilbao. Basurko had returned to his home port to repair and replace sails destroyed in the violent Bay of Biscay gale last Monday and Tuesday. Dalton is starting the VELUX 5 OCEANS fresh, having reindexed in Bilbao to continue work on his Open 50, delaying his race start for five days. Both skippers are beating west along Spain's northern coast, Basurko's Open 60, Pakea, furthest offshore leading Dalton's smaller fifty-footer, A Southern Man - AGD, by just seven miles.

USA skipper Tim Troy is still in La Rochelle undertaking vital adjustments to his 60 foot yacht Margagret Anne in order to comply with the regulatory body of the Open 60 class, IMOCA's specifications.
