Sir Robin Knox-Johnston finishes 3rd in the final leg

SIR ROBIN KNOX-JOHNSTON COMPLETES AN HISTORIC SOLO CIRCUMNAVIGATION OF THE PLANET

English solo sailing legend Sir Robin Knox-Johnston has crossed the finish line of the VELUX 5 OCEANS in Bilbao (Basque Country) at 11:22:03 local time (09:22:03 GMT). The 68 year old sailor completed the third and final leg of the VELUX 5 OCEANS onboard SAGA INSURANCE after a transatlantic sprint that started in Norfolk (USA) 16 days, 17 hours and 2 minutes ago.

The challenge started on the 22nd of October 2006 when the fleet left Bilbao. Six month later and after 159 days, 12 hours and 42 minutes at sea, Sir Robin's result marks an extraordinary achievement. First man to ever complete a solo circumnavigation in 1969, Sir Robin Knox-Johnston now 68, sails into the history books after completing this historic solo voyage.

to cross the finish line of the third and final leg of the VELUX 5 OCEANS in the next four hours (Bilbao, Basque country)

At 07:30 in Spain (05:30 GMT), English sailing legend Sir Robin Knox-Johnston onboard SAGA INSURANCE was 35 miles away from the finish of the VELUX 5 OCEANS. Sailing at the average speed of 10 knots, he should cross the finish line in the next 3-4 hours.

After 15 days at sea since he left Norfolk (Virginia, USA), Sir Robin looks set to take third place of the final leg of the Ultimate Solo Challenge. The final transatlantic leg of the race will leave him either 3rd or 4th place overall, depending on when rival Unai Basurko would cross the finish line, still 140 miles away from his actual position.
