B&Q start Leg 7 Asian Record Circuit

B&Q have crossed the start line off Hong Kong at 07:52:20 GMT (15:52:20 local time 30/04/06) to begin Leg 7 to Sanya on Hainan Island. Conditions reindex light as they sail in six-eight knots of breeze from the SSW, the wind is expected to build tonight up to 14-15 knots which they will need to cover the 354nm to the finish gate inside their target time of 29 hours which is the current existing record for this course.

Light airs affecting Hong Kong meant the team abandoned their planned attempt on the round Hong Kong island record and instead heading straight off on the next 354 nm leg to the finish gate off Sanya, Hainan Island crossing the start line this morning. B&Q has only covered 38 miles in the last five hours in wind speeds of around six knots from the S-SE but hopefully winds are set to increase to over 10 knots later this afternoon and up to 17 knots by this evening which should increase their average speed as they progress southwards towards the gate off Hainan Island which is still part of China. This next stage of the Asian Record Circuit covers four 'hops' via Sanya, Nha Trang (Vietnam), Tumpai (Thailand) then finally Terengganu, Malaysia which is the next stopover port for the team. Each 'hop' counts as a separate leg on this penultimate stage of the tour. As April turns to May, the Asian continent is heating up (27 degrees onboard B&Q), generally lowering pressure and a greater nmber of SE and S winds occur. Winds can be light with weather data for Sanya, the next course gate, showing that winds in excess of 17 knots are experienced less than 0.2% of the time, and in the last 8 years no wind reading above 28 knots has ever been recorded! Commanders' weather are forecasting that the light SSE winds currently being experienced by B&Q will shift more S-SSW tonight and a weak small front may deliver stronger breeze in the next 2-3 days with 13-19 knots from SSW expected tomorrow. B&Q is sailing 60+ miles offshore from the Chinese indexland heading SSW. The crew of B&Q will have to cross the course gate off Sanya by 12:52 GMT tomorrow to finish inside their self-imposed target time of 29 hours on this leg. by Team Ellen
