From ocean racing Maxis to Minis!
It is clear that the spring of 2006 is buzzing with activity for the Orange sailing team and its ocean racing centre of excellence! This project was first announced last autumn during the presentation of the Orange sailing team. It is now taking shape with the participation of a 6.50 Mini in the Mini Fastnet race, which takes place this weekend.
The Team is also busy in other areas. The giant Orange II is on stand-by in New York waiting to make an attempt at the North Atlantic record, while Stève Ravussin will be joining Yves Parlier's hydraplaneur crew for a forthcoming battle to smash the 24-hour distance record!

It was first announced back at the end of 2005 that the Orange sailing team would like to develop a centre of excellence, encouraging the transmission of knowledge and experience. Supported by Erik Orsenna, a leading French author and member of the "Académie Française", as well as a keen sailor, this project is now being unveiled with a member of the Mini Class joining the team. This class is a real breeding ground for undiscovered talents. Mathieu Sannié, an employee of the France Telecom Group (who came sixth in the last edition of the Mini Transat for series boats), will be wearing the colours of the Orange sailing team for the first time in the Mini Fastnet which will begin on Sunday in Douarnenez. Mathieu is pleased to be joining the organisation : « It's a great chance for me and I'm looking forward to lots of contact with the other members of the team from whom I can obviously learn a lot.» Would any talented amateur not dream of being able to benefit from the advice and experience of sailors like Bruno Peyron, Stève Ravussin and Yves Parlier ? «What we're doing is trying to help people into situations, where they can really express their talent at the right moment on the best boat possible», Bruno Peyron declared when this development project was first announced. Mathieu Sannié, who will be sailing his Pogo 2 along with his brother Guillaume, is hoping to be up with the winners in this Mini Fastnet, which looks like being a toughly fought race.
Orange II on stand-by in New York...
The Orange sailing team brings together not only the smallest, but also the biggest of ocean racing yachts, so let's go from the mini-monohull right up to the giant multihull. There is indeed currently a lot of exciting news about the maxi-catamaran Orange II : on stand-by in New York, the fastest sailboat in the world is waiting for the perfect weather opportunity to set sail on her attempt at the North Atlantic record. This crossing, which is surely the most legendary of ocean voyages, was first raced back in 1905 and has now become the record with the fastest average speed for any of the ocean races ! It is certainly quite a challenge facing Orange II and her crew, but they have the means and the ambition to carry it off...
Pure speed...
Let's stay in the area of pure speed and talk about Yves Parlier and Stève Ravussin, who are both members of the Orange sailing team. They will be combining their talents soon on board Yves' hydraplaneur, to make an attempt at the crewed 24-hour distance record. Parlier has just smashed the equivalent record for single-handed sailors in brilliant style, improving considerably on the previous record. This will not be the first time that Stève and Yves have sailed together, as they already covered a few miles together recently in the Canaries, the current base camp for the hydraplaneur during her record-breaking campaign.
The Orange Armor-Cup
The ninth edition of the Armor cup will be taking place on the 16th, 17th and 18th June in Port Haliguen, this year under the new name of "Orange Armor-Cup." A club event reserved for employees of the France Télécom Group, this regatta is raced on board "Grand Surprise" monotype boats sailed by crews of 6 or 7. This edition looks like being a great success, as 28 boats will be lining up for the start, with more than 250 staff taking part and no less than 7 nations being represented, where the France Télécom Group is established (Spain, Great Britain, the Netherlands, Poland, Slovakia and Switzerland).
