PRESS RELEASE OF THE June 6 06
Pacific crossing record West-to-East: Geronimo pushed by shallow depression

Now two-thirds of the way from Yokohama to San Francisco, Geronimo is covering the sea miles “quietly”, pushed by a weak depression.

“We find ourselves in waters covered by a pretty inactive weather front. Depressions normally move faster than this. Before this, it was flat calm. It’s not moving very fast now, so neither are we”, said Olivier de Kersauson in this morning’s bulletin.
The depression in question is also pushing the high pressure systems moving across the route of the CapGemini/Schneider Electric, trimaran, but only slowly. “We’re keeping an eye on the barometer, but generally speaking there’s not a lot to do and things are fairly boring. We’re making between 13 and 20 knots depending on the wind, close-hauled on a flat sea. So there aren’t many manoeuvres to make and there’s no real strategy in sight. We’re on the direct track and waiting for the pressure to drop so that we can get going again. We’re moving with the depression, so when it speeds up, so will we – it’s as simple and as boring as that. It’s been the same ocean and the same light for the last 72 hours, and not much has happened”.

At 13:00 French time, Geronimo had 1494 nautical miles left to run, and was 2 days, 9 hours ahead of the existing record.
