Sam Davies all set for the start of the B to B, her first solo race on Roxy
It's a new start. For the most French of British sailors, Samantha Davies, it's the beginning of a whole new adventure on board her 60', ROXY, in a single-handed race.
After competing in last April's Calais Round Britain Race, in which she and her crewmates set a new women's record time for sailing around the British Islands, and then briskly completing the Transat Jacques Vabre (10th place and first among the older boats) with her friend and co-skipper, Jeanne Grégoire, Sam is (finally) all alone on her boat.
Today, she sets off in the "B to B", her first ever single-handed race on ROXY, between Salvador de Bahia in Brazil and Port La Forêt in Brittany.
For her boat, twice winner of the Vendée Globe under the colours of PRB, the race promises to be long and hard. ROXY is not as fast as later generation monos, especially when sailing close to the wind.
Never mind that, Sam has been champing at the bit, desperate to get back out on the water, solo this time, and put into practice some of the lessons she learned from the Jacques Vabre.
Having arrived safely in Bahia despite 18 days' racing in the Route du Café, Roxy will set out at 3pm French time today, ready to show what she's capable of. Sam, meanwhile, is preparing for what should be a tough 4,200 mile voyage across the Atlantic, to stamp her ticket to the Vendée Globe 2008.
