Clipper fleet arrive in Rotterdam

The Clipper Round the World Yacht Race fleet have arrived in Rotterdam ahead of the inaugural North Sea Race from Rotterdam to Hull on Wednesday 25 July. This will be the Clipper 07-08 fleet’s first international race ahead of the Clipper 07-08 Race and it is also the first time the fleet have visited the international city of Rotterdam.

The ten strong Clipper fleet made their way up the River Maas on Tuesday morning after a challenging night of sailing with winds exceeding 50mph. Rotterdam was a welcome sight to the Clipper crew, many of who had never experienced gale force winds before.
At 11:00 the boats entered the Veerhaven Marina and the crew set to work cleaning the boats and themselves before heading off to explore the dynamic and vibrant city of Rotterdam.

Dutch crewmember and student at Rotterdam’s International Business School, Wijbrand Tuinstra was excited to have sailed into his academic city. “It was a thrilling night of sailing and an amazing experience sailing up the River Maas into Rotterdam,” said Wijbrand. “I’m looking forward to seeing my friends while I’m here and showing them round my boat Durban 2010,” he added.

The crew and their skippers from each of the city sponsored Clipper racing yachts have been invited by the city of Rotterdam to attend a reception at the Royal Maas Yacht Club at 16:00 today. The city has been outstanding in it’s welcome to the Clipper 07-08 Race fleet and the Vice Mayor of the city, Mrs. Jeanette Baljeu, will be attending the reception.

On Wednesday 25 July the fleet will leave Veerhaven Marina at 15:00 hours, where they will parade in front of the Erasmus Bridge before making their way up the River Maas. The race is scheduled to start at 20:30 at the Indusbank area at the mouth of the river.

The end of the North Sea Race on Friday 27 July will mark the start of a weekend of festivities in Hull in recognition of the 200th anniversary of the abolition of the slave trade, a campaign lead by Hull MP William Wilberforce. Prize giving will take place on the Plaza Stage at The Plaza in Humber Quays and the winning team will be presented with the Wilberforce Challenge Cup, a specially designed Wedgewood Trophy. Clipper Race Chairman Sir Robin Knox-Johnston will be attending the presentation, Sir Robin says:

“The North Sea Race for the Wilberforce Challenge Cup marks the first competitive race before the Clipper 07-08 Race start on 16 September. I look forward to seeing how the teams perform and to be able to spend time with the crews in Hull.”
