Passing the Cape Verde Islands
Yesterday it appeared that Nova Scotia would employ different tactics to Durban 2010 and Beyond around the Cape Verde Islands, but a radical last minute course change by the crew of Nova Scotia indicated that they did not want to take the risk and decided to follow the lead boat around the west side of the islands. Reports of a broken guy lead to them trailing Durban 2010 and Beyond by over 45 miles last night but the positions this morning show a significant improvement.

Glasgow: Scotland with Style Clipper and Hull & Humber have chosen to take the risk of encountering big wind shadows again by going through the middle of the islands. This is a brave decision to make following a hard lesson learned last week by the lack of wind on their course through the Canary Islands. Qingdao appear to be taking the most easterly course and leaving the islands on their starboard side and acording to their skipper, Marcus Cholerton-Brown, they are “going like the clappers.”
Joff Bailey, Race Director: “It is too early to work out how Uniquely Singapore, westernaustralia2011.com and Liverpool 08 intend to tackle this obstacle but I am sure last weekend’s drift through the Canary Islands will figure in any decision making process. At the moment however, they are experiencing fantastic trade wind sailing reflected by the fact that westernaustralia2011.com posted a 12 hour run of 116 nautical miles.”
New York also appear to have found some wind, posting a 12 hour run of 102 nautical miles overnight, their best for the last week, but Jamaica have steadily lost miles over the last few days and are still struggling to get into stronger winds. Despite this Simon Bradley, skipper of Jamaica, reports that morale on board reindexs high: “All OK on board. The wind is coming and going and that’s not just the crew! Ladies Night was a big success, in future dental surgery will be performed by Francesa the outright winner of the competition. One Love – Jamaica”
Jamaica are having some intermittent problems with their communications at the moment after a wave damaged some of the communications equipment. The crew have asked for their friends and family to be patient and that the messages will get
