Sail-Worlld UK-Europe meldet:
Joyon on IDEC covers 451 miles in first 24 hours
Commenting on his start Francis Joyon on IDEC; 'I hardly had time to delve into my computer' he said at midday Saturday, ignoring his 'score' of the day - 451 miles across the Bay of Biscay during the first 24 hours of racing.
IDEC was under index sail staysail and two reefs, doing better throughout the afternoon, bringing to 546 miles (18:00 French time) the total distance traveled from Brest at an average 17.66 knots.
Francis reached more than 22 knots along the edge southwest starting last night with a gybe closer to the coast of Spain. The wind was blowing strongly off the coast of Portugal, more than 30 knots, and it is there that Francis will seek the angle and strength of wind favorable to the large trimaran.
Jean-Yves Bernot, weather adviser to Joyon:
'starting windows' are hard to find in this season, configurations currently faced by Francis fully meet the skipper Morbihanais. 'We should keep the strong wind for some time' jettison this morning he laconically.
And the figures give reason. The highly theoretical gap that separates the route virtual of Ellen MacArthur in 2005, is tonight 85 nautical miles. Joyon has dramatically placed IDEC correctly on the first day.

True to his reputation, he sacrifices himself completely to feeling the boat. Far from the land and away from men, Joyon will gradually enter into this mysterious and anachronistic rhythm of the life of sailor.
The maxi trimaran IDEC left Brest Friday morning at 11h 05'52''French time. Objective: To sailaround the world in less than 71 days, 14 hours, 18 minutes and 33 seconds. To beat the record, Francis Joyon must return before Sunday, February 3, 2008 at 1h 23'25''(HF).
