Acrobatics onboard Cheminées Poujoulat

The seven yachts making up the leading group are all within 50 miles of each other. It's got nothing to do with the potential speed of the boats though, and everything to do with this key point of the race as the Open 60s try to get past the Canaries, where some could find themselves becalmed, whilst others sprint away...

Bernard Stamm and Tanguy Cariou have succeeded in catching the five breakaway boats at the head of this Transat Jacques Vabre fleet: Safran, Foncia, Gitana Eighty, Groupe Bel and Ecover. It was a taxing comeback, which has brought Cheminées Poujoulat to within fifty miles of the leader. Yesterday, as the Open 60 of Bernard Stamm and Tanguy Cariou had just passed Ecover, the gennaker halyard parted, sending this vital sail into the water.
"We lost a little ground recovering the sail and getting back on track", says Bernard Stamm. "At the next sail change, we had to climb the mast and fit a new halyard. It was tiring and very acrobatic, but it was the only way to avoid losing too much time! But everything's fixed now, and all's well onboard."

A few precious miles will have been lost in recovering from this incident, but more important is the energy they've had to expend, at a time when they'll need to keep very clear heads to get past the Canaries.

Their track takes them in the lee of the islands, and conditions can be complicated by the wind shadow cast by the land. "Our route could still change, but that's not very likely. The solutions become fewer and fewer the further we get. We're not on the "normal" route, but in the absence of the trade winds, we don't have much choice but to chase the squalls off the African coast."

It's a tricky situation, and one that could virtually restart the race. "These boats are travelling fast, and everything could change within four hours. If it all changes at the front, then the entire face of the race could change for the leading group and all those following it. I'm certainly happier to be where I am now, rather than where those at the back of the pack are. But for our little group of seven boats, all within 50 miles of each other, everything is possible here, or later off the Cape Verde islands or in the Doldrums…"

So the race reindexs intensely competitive. Its "long haul" format is relatively new to Tanguy Cariou, who is more familiar with one-day America's Cup events… but he's loving it. "This race format is fantastically involving, and it's a real pleasure to be sailing with Bernard and on this type of boat. The most important thing is to make sure you don't push yourself too hard."

Tactics and strategy will therefore be the two most important words onboard in the hours ahead!
