First Ever Omani Round The World Attempt
Onboard Ellen MacArthur's Record Breaking Trimaran
Muscat, 2 December 2008: The Oman Sail project was launched today in Muscat, Oman, by Her Excellency, The Minister of Tourism Dr Rajhia bint Abdulamir bin Ali. This project will encompass a wide range of activities over the coming years including a round the world record attempt on board Ellen MacArthur's former record-breaking 75-foot trimaran 'BQ, now known as 'Musandam'.
After a vigorous selection process, 33 year old Mohsin Al Busaidi is set to be the first Omani to attempt to sail at high speed the gruelling 23,000 miles around the planet from Muscat to Muscat, onboard the 75 foot trimaran 'Musandam'.
In conjunction with the launch, four Extreme 40s are racing off the coast of Muscat in the Oman Air Extreme 40 Challenge - Act 2 Dubai. It is the first time these hi-tech professionally sailed racing machines have competed in the (GCC) region. Each of the 4 boats competing includes 2 sailors from the Oman Sail Race Team, in their first ever competitive regatta as crew.
