DAMAGE ABOARD LAITERIE DE SAINT-MALO
SPECIAL FLASH
At 1230 UT this Sunday, Sylvie Viant, Race Director of the 7th Transat Quebec Saint Malo received a call from Victorien Erussard, skipper of the 50 foot trimaran Laiterie de Saint Malo. The 50 foot multihull hit a sea creature at full speed. Everyone on board is fine but they have broken their one and only rudder. They hope to be able to replace it with a spare appendage…
Sylvie Viant, Race Director
“Victorien Erussard has informed me that Laiterie de Saint Malo hit a sea creature at full pace. The impact has caused damage: the central rudder is broken.

It is the only one equipping the boat. Victorien was fairly despondent and didn’t really know how they could continue racing. Together with his crew, he is currently trying to install an emergency rudder and should then decide whether or not he will continue on towards Saint Malo or if he’ll turn back to Cape Race in headwinds. We’ll know more in a few hours’ time even though it would seem that to continue in the downwind conditions would doubtless appear to be the best solution…”
At the 1300 UT position report, Laiterie de Saint Malo was on starboard tack in the first third of the Atlantic, on a course of 128. Its speed had dropped to 2 knots. The crew is busy installing its spare rudder.
