A specialist medical team is on board HMAS Arunta which left at around 1800GMT and should
take about 40 hours to reach Generali's position - approximately 1100
miles SSE of Perth - sometime towards the end of Saturday afternoon. As
far as the race is concerned, the 4 frontrunners are at the longitude of
the 2nd Australian Gate and should cross it soon. Thanks to a much
better speed (by some 4 knots) than that of Jean Le Cam throughout the
night, Sébastien is back in third place with more than 20 miles of lead.
18/12/2008 19:14 Sébastien and Le Cam slightly distanced
The 1900 GMT position report shows that Michel Desjoyeaux and Roland
Jourdain have widened the gap with Sébastien and Jean Le Cam, now more
than 100 miles from the leader. The 2 skippers are sailing at a frantic
pace, heading to the second Australian Gate. Faithful to his "Fast but
safe" philosophy, Sébastien is catching up with Jean Le Cam only 8 miles
ahead of him.
18/12/2008 12:09 Yann Elies (Generali) victim of a broken thigh-bone
This Thursday morning, while manoeuvring at the front of his boat, Yann
Elies, skipper of Generali, fractured his thigh-bone. While waiting to
be evacuated from the boat, Marc Guillemot, skipper of Safran, has
changed course at the request of the race direction to reach Yann Elies
for psychological support. Safran was only one hundred miles away from
Generali. While Yann Eliès was changing sails aboard Generali, a huge
wave came crashing through and halted the boat, and Yann's leg, resting
on the pulpit, took all the impact. He felt a sharp pain, and
immediately crawled inside his boat, at which time he called the CROSS,
his team and the race direction. According to Jean-Yves Chauve's initial
diagnostic, Yann suffers from a broken thigh-bone. The monohull is
currently 800 miles away from Southern Australia in the Indian Ocean.
Australian rescue teams have been alerted, they are currently devising
their best option to evacuate the skipper in a timely manner.
