Day 08: Sébastien Josse moves into second

In Brief: - BT overtakes VM Matériaux... but the battle is still tight
- The "three leading musketeers" break away
- Tricky weather conditions ahead for the bulk of the fleet

In detail:
Less than 200 miles away from Cape Verde Islands, the leading trio has made a break and Jean-Pierre Dick, in 4th position, is now more than 40 miles behind Sébastien Josse on BT, who brilliantly moved into second place this morning. The 6th Vendée Globe has left Les Sables d'Olonne a week ago, and with the Trade Winds going into "lazy" mode today, we could be witnessing one of the first key moments of the race... Less pressure in the sails, more tension at the navstation! Meanwhile in front, the rich might just get richer!

Less than 3 days ago, the battled raged on between Sébastien Josse and Jean-Pierre Dick, often less than 5 miles away from each other, but this Sunday the score seems settled - at least momentarily - since BT has now cleanly pulled away from Paprec-Virbac, claiming second place as he powered along. And if Loick Peyron managed to increase his lead over his two closest rivals overnight, the three musketeers at the front of the fleet are still a tight bunch, with just over 30 miles of separation between Gitana Eighty and third-placed Jean Le Cam.

The situation may well prove tricky for the pursuers as the Trade Winds seem to want to take some time off: for the bulk of the fleet, speeds are bound to decrease while the leading boats should be less affected on their descent towards Cape Verde Islands. Yet they will be wise enough to know better than to celebrate too early, as the westerners Riou, Dick or Le Cléac'h could find fresh air on their path!

As Sébastien told us over the phone today, "The important thing is to be in the right pack, the actual positioning is less an issue. It's very satisfying to have sailed well, to have taken the right options. Then again, it's not like we have been the first ones to enter the Southern Ocean, the Doldrums still have to be crossed and that can obliterate our lead." During this morning's audio vacation with the Vendée Globe organisers, he also pointed out: "The Cape Verde Islands passage is another story, there are several ways in and out, it's an interesting tactical moment."
