Since yesterday, Jean Pierre Dick is leading the fleet of the Vendée
Globe and is sailing at a wild rhythm, averaging a speed of 17 knots
throughout the night. He has been increasing his lead on his pursuers:
Sébastien is now in third place, 34 miles behind the leader and 4 miles
behind Roland Jourdain, second.Loick Peyron, who dismasted yesterday,
is heading to the Nord East (Australia is 3000 miles ahead of him) and
is sailing at 6 knots under jury rig.
10/12/2008 19:05 JP Dick back in the lead
JP Dick regains the position of leader after taking it from Sébastien,
who led for a few hours today. Now 9,9 miles behind Virbac Paprec, BT is
sailing further in the North with Michel Desjoyeaux, around 20 miles
behind. Boat speeds have slightly decreased since this afternoon and are
now around 16 knots. Did the sea become heavier or is Loick Peyron's
dismasting on everybody's mind tonight and did skippers decide to slow
down a bit?
10/12/2008 15:47 Loick Peyron dismasts...
After sailing at the front of the fleet in this Vendée Globe 2008-2009
for over a month, Loïck Peyron called his shore crew early this
afternoon to announce that he had dismasted. The incident occurred
shortly after 1400 hours this Wednesday 10th December, whilst Gitana
Eighty was in 3rd position in a close, full-on race. Down below when the
mast fell, Loïck Peyron is safe and sound. Meanwhile, BT and Paprec are
fighting for the lead, 0.3 miles separating the 2 boats.
