14/12/2008 07:52 Dick widens the gap
Thanks to a boat speed more than 2 knots higher than the rest of the
frontrunners throughout the night, Jean Pierre Dick has this morning a
record advantage of 74 milles on Mike Golding, second. Still 5th this
morning, Sébastien have been slightly left behind sailing throughout the
night at a 13 knots speed average. He is now 174 miles behind the
leader. The leaders are now angled north-east towards the western end of
the next ice security gate, less than 400 miles ahead.
13/12/2008 15:01 100 miles behind the leader
Exactly 100 miles separate Sébastien from the leader Jean-Pierre Dick in
terms of distance to the finish as the more southerly placed boats sail
faster. But all the frontrunners are still sailing at an amazing speed -
between the two latest position reports, average speed for BT is close
to 20 knots as Roland Jourdain regains the 2nd position thanks to a 21
knots average speed. But these are the averages, Seb told his shore team
today that he was at times going at 30+ knots plus. As is the trend, the
boats are sailing on the edge of their limitations and some are now
suffering - dismasting, keel damage and now rudder damage for Stamm.

13/12/2008 11:01 Rudder damage on Cheminées Poujoulat
Bernard Stamm has just alerted his team that he's diverting to Australia
after discovering he has rudder problems. "The rudder bearings have worn
abnormally and could break at any moment, making it impossible to
manoeuvre the boat. I think it's due to a flaw in the material, because
there's no reason for it to wear to this extent at this stage in a
circumnavigation." He is under two reefs and staysail and is making for
Fremantle.
