16/12/2008 05:30 Golding, new leader...
As expected, Mike Golding onboard Ecover 3 is the new leader of the
Vendée Globe, first non-French skipper to lead the fleet since the start
on the 9th of November. Jean-Pierre Dick, who damaged his rudder system
yesterday, was almost 4 knots slower than his pursuers and didn't manage
to keep the lead. Sébastien is still 5th, only 63 miles behind Golding.
This morning, 6 boats are back in less than 100 miles and widen the gap
with the chasing group, lead by Armel Le Cleac'h more than 200 miles
behind.
15/12/2008 19:16 Closing in - fast
Sébastien, still averaging some 19 knots of speed, is quickly catching
up on the unfortunate JP Dick, who has slowed down this afternoon after
colliding with a floating object. Now only 78.1 miles behind the leader,
BT is sailing right under the ice gate, preparing for the tough
conditions tonight. As he explained earlier today, "We'll stay with that
low pressure system quite a bit, it will bring us far, probably even to
the next ice gate". Not a good time for Dick to be in trouble, as his
pursuers should not have a hard time attaining high boat speeds given
the conditions... Has the race taken a new turn?
15/12/2008 16:12 Paprec-Virbac 2 collides with a floating object
Paprec-Virbac 2 slowed down after suffering rudder damage due to a
collision with a floating object. Vendee Globe leader Jean-Pierre Dick
(Paprec-Virbac) is sailing at reduced speed after a violent collision
with an unidentified object in the water. The impact caused the
starboard rudder to kick up. As he tried to get it back in place Dick
realised that the connecting arm which joins the two rudders is broken
and that the rudder stock is also damaged. Dick, who has lead the solo
round the world race since last Wednesday Paprec-Virbac 2 has slowed and
is sailing with just the port rudder down and will need to ride out the
storm which had already brought the leaders 35- 40 knot winds this
afternoon. Dick is evaluating his options as to how he might effect a
repair. On the 1500GMT position report Paprec-Virbac 2 was making 11.8
knots.
