Slowing down (slightly!)
Having crossed the 147 degrees of longitude yesterday, BT is now no
longer sailing in the Indian Ocean but the Pacific Ocean (the Southern
Ocean being the collective name for these 2 oceans) and no change in the
last 24 hours as Sébastien continues to hold 3rd place, 170 miles behind
Michel Desjoyeaux (Foncia). The leader has momentarily slowed as Foncia
feels the effects of the ridge of high pressure ahead and this will
touch the chasing 3 boats today. For now 4th placed Jean Le Cam is
benefitting from stronger breeze and covered over 400 miles in the last
24 hrs. So perhaps a small compression for the frontrunners but don't
expect Desjoyeaux to yield any miles of his advantage easily.
20/12/2008 19:01 Into the Pacific Ocean...
The first four boats of the Vendée Globe fleet entered the Pacific Ocean
today. Still led by Michel Desjoyeaux, the 4 frontrunners have slightly
slowed down this morning before catching a new breeze this afternoon.
Boats speeds are around 18 knots, an impressive figure we're getting
used to given the amazing pace of this edition of the Vendée Globe.
Sébastien is still third, at a stable distance of 148 miles from Foncia.
20/12/2008 11:08 Transfer Complete
At around 1050hrs GMT it has been confirmed live by Marc Guillemot that
the transfer of Yann Elies has been completed from Generali on to the
Frigate HMAS Arunta. Marc Guillemot, (Safran) reporting from the scene:
"Some highly professional work. They prepared Yann for the transfer.
Still heavy swell but they carried out the manoeuvre perfectly. Yann is
now aboard the frigate and doctors are taking care of him." Marc was
overcome by emotion, "It was like a dream. It didn't seem real. They
took care of that magnificently."
