Day 44: Avoiding the ridge
In Brief:
- BT gybed this morning to avoid getting trapped in light airs
- Not so long ago, the 10 first boats were within 100 miles of each other. Today 10-placed Brian Thompson is 1800 miles away from the leader!
- Sébastien waiting for the racetrack to turn into a chessboard
- Sailing at the antipodes, BT could not be any further from our European timing
- Partner of the day: E.ON

In Detail:
Night has fallen on the frontrunners as us Europeans have not gone through this Monday morning yet, and some 300 miles away from 0° of longitude, Sébastien is now perfectly out of sync with our timing! "My night is beginning as we speak", said the skipper at 12:30 GMT, "I'm really at the bottom of the world at the moment. but soon I'll be on my way back since by Wednesday I will have crossed the 0° longitude! It's still early to be talking about it, but I do think about the moment when I'll take that left turn to head back home - despite the fact that I have plenty to keep me busy of course. I gybed this morning to gain North in order to avoid the high pressure ridge that is slowing me down." Third some 40 miles away in front of Jean Le Cam, Sébastien is still doing a great job of keeping up with the frantic duet leading the fleet.

It was interesting to hear the two Vendée Globe leaders today, as both Desjoyeaux and Jourdain commented on the fast pace adopted by the front of the fleet and resulting in 4th-placed Le Cam some 230 miles away from the leader. "I wouldn't mind slowing down", noted Desjoyeaux, "but I don't think I should be the one to ease off first", he added, suggested his pursuers should be a little less threatening if they want him to take it easier! As one could have expected, this way of seeing things made second-placed Roland Jourdain laugh: "I guess", he said, "that is a kind of chicken and egg problem!" And of course, the whole argument goes to show how psychological the battle can also get. especially when Desjoyeaux, who is notbaly faster than his rivals, made a point of concluding his chat with the race organisers by saying he was now going to get a good night of sleep!
Eagerly waiting for the tactical battle to unfold, Sébastien admits the sheer speed race has been going on a bit too long for his liking: "BT is a fast boat, and I'm happy to trim or perform whatever sail changes are required to get the best out of her, but plotting the strategy is somewhat more stimulating."
