Leg 8 - Galway to Marstrand
A change of pace, the short sprint legs start in Galway with this one to Marstrand. South down the west coast of Ireland, then south-east across the Irish Sea to England. The course takes them eastwards up the English Channel, into the North Sea and finally to the entrance to the Baltic. By leg eight it will be June, early summer. Low pressure systems could still dominate the weather, but then so could high pressure and light air. Other hazards include the tidal streams running around the British and Irish headlands that the fleet must negotiate, and once they pass the entrance into the Baltic, they will have the mountains of Norway to the north. This area, the Skagerrak, can produce some unpredictable weather.
