Welcome to Geraldton
The people of Geraldton-Greenhough were out in force on Sunday afternoon to give a rousing welcome to the crews of the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race.
Under a blazing sun, a member from each team carried their boat’s country flag while another carried a banner emblazoned with their boat name and the message ‘THANK YOU GERALDTON-GREENOUGH.’ It made for a colourful sight as more than 100 crew dressed in their team kit walked the length of Marine Terrace Mall to the sound of their boat songs and prolonged applause from the local residents.
While Hull & Humber continues to battle towards the shores of Western Australia, two of her crew arrived last night, having chosen to make the journey on board Cork in order to meet with family. With the crew members joining the boat for the next leg, it meant that all ten boats were represented and it was good to see the teams orange colours represented by five crew at the head of the parade.
Of course, the biggest cheer was reserved for the local team and the Spirit of Australia skipper and crew were given a huge ovation when they reached the end of the Mall.
