Gitana Team - 2010 season
The Gitana Team and Yann Guichard decide not to renew their collaboration
Following a fruitful working venture together, culminating in the Route du
Rhum, the Gitana Team, a racing stable founded by Baron Benjamin de
Rothschild back in 2000, and sailor Yann Guichard have decided not to renew
their collaboration.
For the 2011 season, the Gitana Team wishes to entrust the helm of its
various boats to two separate skippers: one regatta racer to drive the
Extreme 40 Edmond de Rothschild Group during the Extreme Sailing Series and
one sailor to initiate the Multi One Design story aboard a 70 foot one
design trimaran.
This strategic development is based around the Extreme Sailing Series
programme, which will see some new top level competitors doing battle in the
2011 season, during which the event is set to expand even further
internationally. At the same time, the launch of the Multi One Design will
require considerable investment both in sporting and technical terms.
The Gitana Team and Yann Guichard weren't able to come to an agreement as
regards the new organisation for this proposed new sports programme.
The Gitana Team, a unique way of working in the universe of sailing
competition
In 2000, Baron Benjamin de Rothschild created the Gitana Team, a racing
stable based in Saint-Philibert in Brittany's Morbihan region. Having become
a major player in this universe, the Gitana Team still retains its unique
approach. Indeed within the Gitana Team, Baron Benjamin de Rothschild
entrusts the helm to sailors who correspond with the profile of race
programmes as well as the type of boats available. Not a very common
practice in the nautical environment, this approach is fairly commonplace in
other sporting disciplines such as motorsports.
A mechanical sports buff and a passionate man, the President of the Edmond
de Rothschild Group is keen to continue a tradition, which was started by
his forefathers in 1876, by enabling famous sailors and young skippers alike
to express themselves on these fabulous craft that are multihulls. In this
way, over the past ten years, various sailors have defended the colours of
this family saga, whilst gleaning a number of the most prestigious sailing
titles: Route du Rhum, The Transat, Records (Route de l'Or, Transpacific, as
well as the SNSM Trophy.).
Gitana, in the wake of a passion
Over the past 130 years or so, "Gitana" has immediately conjured up images
of a line of boats which convey the passion of a family who have always been
driven by a taste for excellence. The Rothschilds are carrying on a
tradition based on social etiquette and innovation, performance and beauty;
a story where each generation has left its own unique mark.
In 2000, Baron Benjamin de Rothschild steered the Gitana saga towards
multihulls and the creation of the Gitana Team, a high-tech offshore racing
stable dedicated to the passion for making good speed across the water and
the hatching of talent. Since then, Gitana IX, like so many chapters in a
constantly changing story, Gitana X, Gitana 11, 12, 13, Gitana Eighty as
well as Gitana Extreme, have traced ever longer wakes across all the seas of
the globe. From the unremitting teamwork a host of unforgettable human
adventures and resounding wins have been accomplished. An historic multihull
protagonist on a global scale, Benjamin de Rothschild has transformed a
family passion into a school of excellence.
The Gitana Team's yachts sport the colours of the Edmond de Rothschild
Group.
