D-3 prior to the start of the Krys Ocean Race
New York, New York… meets FONCIA!
“One day I’ll go to New York with you…” This may be what Michel Desjoyeaux thought with a number of his boats. Today, this dream has become a reality, after sailing the 150 miles which separate Newport from The Big Apple in some very light winds and greeting the Statue of Liberty. Added to that, he was able to sail the MOD 70 FONCIA on the waters of the Hudson River on Tuesday night and tie up at the foot of the skyscrapers in the swanky quarter of South Manhattan. The fleet of five new one-design multihulls will take the start of the Krys Ocean Race on 7 July for an eastbound Atlantic sprint to Brest.
Though the prologue between Newport, the cradle of American yachting, and the heart of New York City didn’t count towards the standing in the Krys Ocean Race, the results were nonetheless symbolic for all the protagonists in the new MOD70 circuit. Created to lend credibility to large oceanic multihulls, the Multi One Design Championship offered up a thrilling scenario for its first prologue. Indeed, at the end of a final gybing battle against Spindrift Racing (Yann Guichard), FONCIA finished 4th in the prologue, which was contested in very light airs. Victory went to Race for Water (Stève Ravussin), which was just minutes ahead of Edmond de Rothschild Group (Sébastien Josse).

Review of the ‘made in’ MOD prologue
Team FONCIA made the most of the prologue to invite Shirley Robertson, the famous host of the CNN sailing programmes and double Olympic medallist, aboard the MOD 03. This distinguished guest revelled in the intensity of this MOD-style sailing which, given the one-design format, gave rise to a closely-fought battle along the coast of Rhode Island and New Jersey. “Setting out from Newport, when FONCIA was flying two hulls, I knew this race would be a thrilling ride. Even though the wind wasn’t playing ball, I was impressed by the high level of the racing. The boats were very close together throughout and aboard our boat we were constantly battling with Spindrift Racing in a dying breeze and some very strong currents. It was very interesting to sail with Mich: he supervises the navigation whilst reindexing very calm. I’m a total fan!”
A procession of MODs before battle commences
Having crossed the finish line at Verrazano Bridge, which marks the entrance to the waters that bathe Manhattan, and done a photo shoot at the foot of the Statue of Liberty, the fleet made for the pontoons of North Cove Marina. These five offshore birds, with sail surfaces as large as some of the New Yorkers’ lofts, are now tied up between the motor yachts and the J24s which populate the “the Monaco of the Hudson” (local name for this haven of peace nestled at the World Financial Centre, not far from Ground Zero). If the wind allows, the spectacle provided by the fleet of MOD 70s will continue tomorrow during some Speed Matches.
The warm summer air in New York is already filled with the signs of what is set to be an impressive oceanic battle. Indeed on Saturday, at 1100 hours (1500 UTC), the Krys Ocean Race will set sail for Brest. One thing for sure is that landlubbers and sailors alike are in awe of these machines: “long live the multihull!” says Michel Desjoyeaux…
Three questions for Michel Desjoyeaux
What are your first impressions on arriving in New York?
Michel Desjoyeaux: “It’s a pleasure as I’ve never been to New York under sail before. Now, I can safely say that it’s a done deal! It’s really awesome and magical, with the real sense of satisfaction that we’ll soon be taking the start of the Krys Ocean Race. The first event of the MOD70 calendar, is none other than an oceanic sprint: we’re all looking forward to it.”
And this Newport - New York prologue?
M.D.: “The cards weren’t dealt very well for this prologue, and FONCIA didn’t benefit from a good hand. The weather was very stormy, very muggy, which is a very common phenomenon on the eastern seaboard of America during this season. We had some very light air and it was almost reminiscent of Lake Geneva. I think it’s the first time I’ve sailed 150 miles on a multihull and not slipped into my foulies. Incredible! We were involved in a great battle and the guys gave their all and sailed well… The racing was very, very close, even though we didn’t have luck on our side as we approached Brooklyn in the currents.”
The MOD No.3 FONCIA has racked up nearly 10,000 miles since her launch. What do you reckon to this new craft with just a few days to go till the start of the Krys Ocean Race?
M.D.: “All’s well on planet MOD! There’s no structural problem to date. The boat is sound and fulfils the spec nicely. Simple, reliable and easy to handle. I think, I hope, we’ve already made all the mistakes we’re going to make, and we won’t make them again. It’s always a thrill to sail at high speed, when the sea allows… Long live the multihull!”
