NEWSFLASH: Le Cleac’h takes a convincing win in The Transat bakerly IMOCA 60 class
French sailor Armel Le Cleac’h crossed the finish line of The Transat bakerly off New York today at 11:27 local time (16:27 BST), taking honours in the IMOCA 60 class.
Le Cleac’h, at the helm of the IMOCA 60 Banque Populaire, completed the 3,050-nautical mile course from Plymouth in 12 days, 2 hours and 28 minutes and 39 seconds. The final time includes a 31-minute time penalty for accidental breakage of the boats engine seal, which Le Cleac’h informed Race Direction about at 16:26 local time yesterday.
The two-time Vendée Globe runner-up had actually sailed a total of 3,751 miles through the water at an average speed of 12.91 knots. As he crossed the finish line waving in his moment of victory, Le Cleac’h’s main rival for honours in the IMOCA 60 class, Vincent Riou on PRB, was still 31 miles from the line, meaning that Le Cleac’h can be confident in his victory despite the penalty.

NOTES TO EDITORS
The Transat bakerly is the world’s oldest solo transatlantic race, originally know as the OSTAR (Observer Singlehanded Trans-Atlantic Race), and was created in 1960 by a handful of pioneering sailors. Over time The Transat, as it is known today, has evolved and now serves the professional end of offshore sailing. But there are few modern day races that can reflect on such a long and outstanding history.
In 2016, the race will set sail from Plymouth, UK on May 2, for New York and the Brooklyn Bridge Park. 25 entries from four classes will compete; Ultime, IMOCA60, Multi50 and Class 40.
Sailing counter-clockwise against the gulf stream and the wind, sailors can expect to face big swells, tricky currents, quick-changing weather patterns and even icebergs.
The title partner to the race is bakerly, a new brand of French inspired bakery goods. 'bakerly' is a US subsidiary of the French industrial food group Norac.
Race records: Monohull IMOCA 60 record: 12 days, 11 hours and 45 minutes set by Loick Peyron (FRA) on board Gitana in 2008. Multihull 60ft record: 8 days, 8 hours, 29 minutes set by Michel Desjoyeaux (FRA) on board Géant in 2004.
