Vendée Globe and Olympic Games: two summits, the same commitment

The Vendée Globe years coincide with those of the Olympic Games, the 31st edition of which begins this Friday in Rio. Several sailors signed up for the upcoming Vendée Globe have been down the route of the demanding and formative Olympic series. This is not the case for Armel Le Cléac’h, though he’s snapped up the chance to head to Rio to support the promising French Sailing Team. Following on from this Brazilian escapade, Armel will only have eyes for the Vendée Globe, his personal Olympic Games, and his one mission: the gold medal.
This week we met up with two more key figures from the Vendée Globe. Vincent Riou gives us an exclusive insight into the construction of the new one-design wing mast for his PRB. Meantime, Bertrand de Broc, gives us the low-down on his preparation, with the focus on the progress of his brand new mast, which it just so happens has been built in the same moulds as PRB’s spar.

We also learned about the loss of Canadian Derek Hatfield, who participated in the 2008-2009 edition of the solo round the world race without stopovers. The whole of the Vendée Globe team would like to pass on its sincere condolences to his nearest and dearest.
Happy reading and have a great weekend!
