Getting to the start is already a victory
In a fortnight from now on Saturday 15th October, the official Vendée Globe Village will open its doors in Les Sables d’Olonne. For three weeks until the start on 6th November, Port Olona will beat to the rhythm of the Vendée Globe, welcoming hundreds of thousands of visitors. With 37 days to go to the start of the eighth non-stop solo round the world race, the first three competitors are moored up at the legendary Vendée Globe pontoon - Rich Wilson (Great American IV), Nandor Fa (Spirit of Hungary) and Arnaud Boissières (La Mie Câline). Making his way up from the South of France, Kito de Pavant is due to arrive in Les Sables next week.
The boats will arrive one after the other, as the 29 sailors registered for the race must moor up in Les Sables by 14th October. It’s the start of the final countdown. Each minute is carefully scheduled by the skippers. For all of them, there is always a compromise between dealing with the final preparations and taking care of themselves before the big day.
Whether you are aiming to win or about to embark on an adventure, getting to the start of the Vendée Globe is a victory in itself. Didac Costa certainly understands that, after all the sacrifices he has had to make to see his solo round the world dream come true. The damage caused to the electronics on his boat by a lightning strike has not affected his enthusiasm. He is about to become the fourth Spaniard to compete in the Vendée Globe.
