Diversity, differences, designs

With competitors from ten countries aged between 23 and 66, boats launched between 1998 and 2015, budgets for some representing ten times that of another, the Vendée Globe starting from Les Sables d’Olonne in just ten days from now on 6th November seems particularly eclectic, whether we are looking at the men taking part or their boats.
The new generation foil borne IMOCA 60s will exact a proportionately greater physical and mental test than ever before. The boats are capable of over 30kts and nearly fully foil, pushing the boundaries of what a man can do singlehanded. Guillaume Verdier, the naval architect, who collaborated with VPLP on the design of the new generation IMOCAs, tells us what he thinks about the chances of these foilers in this 8th edition.

Differences in age, experience, budgets and designs… Differences that make the Vendée Globe what it is. For Eric Bellion (COMMEUNSEULHOMME) difference can become a strength, if it is accompanied by the desire to work together. He is one of the skippers promoting certain values or publicising charitable work. We take a look this week at how the Vendée Globe sailors are trying to make this a better world.
Hope you enjoy this newsletter. Have a great weekend!
