News No.5 – Normandy Channel Race 2014 - 27 May 2014
In sight of the Lizard!

The weather is favouring the 16 duos competing in the Normandy Channel Race, who have so far encountered more wind than forecast on the grib files.

Indeed the fleet of Class40s is currently rounding the most southerly point in England, Lizard Point, in an easing wind (3 to 5 knots) with L’EXPRESS – TREPIA (Pierre-Yves Lautrou/ Thomas Ruyant) leading the way, followed by CAMPAGNE DE France (Miranda Merron/ Halvard Mabire) and GROUPEMENT FLO (Brieuc Maisonneuve/ Rémi Aubrun) some 1.5 miles shy of the leaders.

They’re set to reach the passage between Land’s End and Wolf Rock in an hour’s time.

At that point, this morning’s grib files show more wind to accompany the fleet as they hook around Tuskar Rock to the south-east of Ireland. As such there is no course change to report as they round the Wolf Rock mark.

This morning’s quotes:

CAMPAGNE DE France – Miranda Merron (at 0228 GMT): "At sunset yesterday evening, we left the grey, rainy horizons behind us and were sailing under clear skies. It’s a beautiful starry night, very peaceful too you might think, but actually it’s a rather lively area of the world with a lot of fishing boats and big ships. We currently have a gentle breeze of 8 - 10 knots of north-westerly wind, which is enabling us to round the Lizard. That will doubtless change before we get there… the wind is in the process of easing. Serenis Consulting is just to leeward of us!”

CONCISE 2 - Juliette Pêtrès: “This morning we have glorious sunshine with 10 knots of NW’ly and we’re sailing under solent. We have smooth, very calm seas, so conditions are good! We’re heading towards Lizard Point and we hope that the fine weather will remain and the wind too, so we can make the most of our passage around the southerly tip of England! There was a lot of shipping last night, especially fishermen, so we had to be vigilant, but the visibility was good. All’s well aboard. Phillippa and I are very happy with the race and the boat and my English is improving! Have a great day. Juliette for Concise.”

GROUPEMENT FLO - Brieuc Maisonneuve: “Here’s the fresh news from Groupement Flo, fresher than the crew in any case, who have been relatively studious since the start… Holidays? You’re having a laugh aren’t you…? The Ramspacher cruises are over… never again… Team spirits are good though. Rémi the Belgian has rediscovered his Mediterranean-racer character and remains on deck with the bit between his teeth trying to take the inside lane in relation to a group of boats led by Pierre-Yves Lautrou and Halvard Mabire (Shrek as Remi says). As the saying goes, ill-gotten gains seldom prosper, and after being gently mocked by GDF SUEZ (nicknamed the yellow dwarf by the joker that is Rémi) and its stunt in the Solent, we ended up (as is the case every time I’m in this part of the world) on Shingles Bank.... Not frightened and unharmed, we headed off again with a little scratch on the bulb and on my ego, given my abilities when calculating tides… Kisses, Brieuc
