NORTH SAILS’ TIM HEALY WINS INAUGURAL J/70 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

Healy and Team Helly Hansen sails impressive regatta in their home waters

September 14, 2014 (Newport, RI) - The 2014 Inaugural J/70 Class World Championships has wrapped, and North’s Tim Healy is now J/70 World Champion. 86 teams, representing 14 nations, traveled to Newport, Rhode Island to compete amongst a highly competitive, fast growing fleet.

Healy and Team Helly Hansen sailed an extremely consistent regatta, ultimately claiming the first-ever J/70 World title with a total of 28 points in 12 races. Joel Ronning and his crew on Catapult captured second place with 39 points, and Brian Keane’s Savasana followed in third with 61 points.
“The first world championship in any class is a milestone for all involved,” said Tim Healy, president of North Sails One Design and avid J/70 sailor. “The amount of enthusiasm in the J/70 class represents a trend toward positive growth within our sport, among sailors of all ages.

Healy’s entire sail inventory are North’s standard J/70 models. “North J/70 sails are a powerful combination of design and our proprietary, low stretch, high durability Radian sailcloth,” said Healy. “The fact that our sail designs have remained the same since day one is a testament to North’s design team and the tools they use to produce the best shapes right out of the box. Fortunately, we’re starting with a great shape and what I feel is the best radial dacron on the market. Because the sails were designed so well right from the beginning, our North One Design experts have been able to focus on refining sail trim and tuning techniques, and sharing this information with our customers.”
“We like to talk about the North Sails difference and it comes down to the resources we have as a company,” Healy explained. “From the design office to our on-the-ground regatta support, the atmosphere within North is to rely on the entire team to pull together to see a project through. Sailors benefit because North sails are going to perform, and our team will be there every step of the way to ensure our customers are fully supported in their sailing. The growth of the J/70 class has been a fantastic learning experience, and we look forward to developing our efforts and working closely with other classes.”
