The Austria Cup will take place in the ‘chocolate box’ town of Gmunden, on the northern shore of Lake Traunsee, a lake nestled in the heart of Austria’s Salzkammergut mountains to the east of Salzburg.
2015 will be the third occasion the picturesque resort and spa has played host to the GC32s and was the venue for the class’ first ever regatta when three boats joined the lake’s annual Allianz Traunseewoche (sailing week) in 2013. In the past the lake has attracted other international classes, notably the RC44 one design fleet. This year, the GC32’s Austria Cup will be a stand-alone event taking place two weeks after Traunseewoche.
The venue offers typical lake conditions with flat water and generally light winds, ideal for getting new teams up to speed during what will be the first GC32 Racing Series event of 2015. But as with any lake surrounded by high mountains there is always the possibility of strong winds and big gusts to keep crews on their toes!
