From the 30 April – 3 May, Qingdao, China hosted Act 3 of the 2015 Extreme Sailing Series™ global tour. With nine international teams lining up to do battle in China’s notorious Olympic sailing city, tension rippled through the dock as three teams entered the Act in deadlock on the podium, The Wave, Muscat, Red Bull Sailing Team and SAP Extreme Sailing Team all tied on 18 points at the top. A make or break racecourse, Fushan Bay in the heart of Qingdao is a perfect sailing stadium, surrounded by skyscrapers the gusts are unpredictable but for the team that can hold their nerve and master the conditions the reward was worth it.
After 22 races, Danish co-skippers Jes Gram-Hansen and Rasmus Køstner dominated leading their team onboard SAP Extreme Sailing Team to take their first ever Act win. A nail-biting final day saw The Wave, Muscat put in a late charge but it wasn’t enough, The Wave, Muscat taking second and Gazprom Team Russia third, their first ever podium position.
The 2015 Extreme Sailing Series now heads to the UK for Act 4, Cardiff presented by Land Rover, 18-21 June. www.extremesailingseries.com.
