What are "manual" and "automatic" modes?

Saturday 20 February 2016 - Three AC45X (experimental) boats training in Bermuda. Oracle sold their first test boat, launched a year ago, to SoftBank Team Japan at the end of 2015. Oracle is sailing their second and third test boats. The rules do not allow them to build any more, but they can modify their existing boats as much as they want. Artemis also launched their first test boat a year ago and they now have a second boat. Bermudians and visitors will have plenty of entertainment in 2016 with five AC45X catamarans to watch. I've had lots of questions about how all the events fit together. You can view a larger version of this chart and download a copy here.
New in 2016: Three races per day
Beginning with the Oman event, there are three races scheduled each day in the America's Cup World Series events. Remember the curious rule that makes races on Day 2 worth double - so coming in last on Day 2 earns the same number of points as coming in first on Day 1. Now, with this new change, the Oman event will be worth as much as the 2015 events in Portsmouth and Gothenburg combined.

ACWS Standings
ACWS scoring explained here. Last place Sunday scores the same as first place Saturday. Curious, but that's the way it is.
Ask me anything about the America's Cup! I don't claim to know all the answers, but I usually can find someone with the information.
Just reply to this email, or use the "Ask Jack" page on my website.
Susan: Why does Oracle talk about sailing their "Sport" boat in "manual" or "automatic" mode? Jack: In 2017, the AC Class race boats may only use manual power from the grinders to adjust the wing, the daggerboards, the jib and the rudder rake. But there are only four grinders and they produce about 300 Watts of power each. The test boats are not restricted to manual power. With the boat in "automatic" mode they can use battery power to pressurize the hydraulics and measure how much power each maneuver requires. In "manual" mode they can see if the grinders can produce that amount of power when it's needed. The designers are trying to optimise the systems for control and and power distribution. Those systems will be hidden inside the hulls, so we wont see them. But they will be key for winning the America's Cup in 2017.
