Finn Class eNews - January 2016
The 2015 season has only just finished with an epic Finn Gold Cup in Takapuna, New Zealand and it's time to start all over again in 2016. The first major event of the year begins tomorrow with the Sailing World Cup Miami. It is important for many and as well as being the regional qualifier for North and South America, is it also acting as stage 1 of the USA Olympic trials plus some internal national selection trials.
By the end of next week we will know two more nations heading to Rio in just under 200 days time. The 50 strong fleet includes 18 from the USA with the favourite for the US berth, Caleb Paine, fending off the 2008 Olympic Silver medalist Zach Railey and perhaps Luke Lawrence who was top US sailor, and ahead of Paine, three years ago in Miami. For the other North American spot, only the Canadians are in the picture, with six sailors taking part.
South America is more interesting, and with Alejandro Foglia (URU) qualifying in Takapuna, the fight will come down to Argentina and Chile. In addition the usual eight-strong Russian team is joined by a select gathering of Europeans. It will be interesting to see who has made any gains since the Gold Cup ended just eight weeks ago. The fleet includes sailors from 15 countries and five continents, with other top sailors competing including Jonas Høgh-Christensen (DEN), Jake Lilley (AUS), Jorge Zarif (BRA), Giorgio Poggi (ITA), Anders Pedesen (NOR) and Björn Allansson (SWE). Some are already heading to Rio, some are not, and some still have to get their tickets. We'll bring you updates during the week as the event unfolds.
Below is the latest round up of Finn news and events. If you would like your event covered or promoted in a future release, or have a photo you'd like to share, please send it to media@finnclass.org.

FINNTEAM Interview - Alejandro Foglia
Interview and video with Alejandro Foglia of the FINNTEAM. "I am only the second athlete in the history of Uruguay to qualify for four Olympic Games, so this was something big, because Uruguay is a very small country of three million people, where the only big sport is football and the media talks only about football." http://finnclass.org/…/fourth-olympics-beckons-for-finntea…/
Hiking is such a pain
Ross Hamilton writes: Hiking is perhaps one of the most miserable sensations in sailing. It is absolutely necessary to hike in order to maintain good boat speed. The trade off is that to achieve decent boat speed you must endure a lot of pain. Over the years I have heard many explanations for this excruciating burning sensation in the legs. I have also heard many training methods to improve hiking endurance. Scattered throughout all this, there have been many inaccurate explanations and absurd suggestions on how to deal with hiking. Hopefully this article (also published in FINNFARE) will clear up some confusion and give an insight into how our body deals with hiking. Read more...
