2017 DYNAMIQ YACHTS MELGES 20 MONACO WINTER SERIES
The trophies found the heroes!
The fifth and the last regatta of the winter season 2016/2017 of the Melges 20 class, the MonteMaggio Cup 2017, ended on the 5th of March in the Yacht Club de Monaco.
The weather, as expected, tested sailors’ skills and nerves (weak winds, strong winds, huge waves), but sailors, as expected, won this battle!
There were three races held on the first day of the regatta, the second day turned out to be a rest day, third and last day gave us three more starts. After six races, it was determined who was ready for the competition in these three days in March.
Italian Maolca of Manfredi Vianini Tolomei had an amazing regatta: three victories and once placed second. It provided this team with a minimal summary of points and well-deserved victory. Congratulations!
Dmitry Samokhin’s Rocknrolla (Andrey Kirilyuk, Georgy Leonchuk) finished second: within six races they have been on the podium three times. It is a pity this team didn't participate in previous 4 Acts of the Dynamiq Yachts Melges 20 Monaco Winter Series. Without a doubt, they would be strong sailors and competitors in the races.
Alexander Ezhkov’s PIRogovo got the third place on the MonteMaggio Cup: one victory, one third place, etc. Frankly speaking, Ezhkov, Daniil Odintsov, and Alexander Ekimov were quite humble on the last regatta, they raised our expectations a lot during the past season. Perhaps, the indisputable leaders decided to relax a little and just enjoy good sailing. Anyhow their first position in the overall rankings of the Dynamiq Yachts Melges 20 Monaco Winter Series 2016/2017 did not float away: the second year in a row PIRogovo team ended up winning the European winter of the Melges 20. Bravo!
Right next to PIRogovo is Marina Kaverzina’s Marussia (Sergey Peshkov, Valeriy Zatsarinskiy). This Corinthian team got the same amount of points as PIRogovo on the MonteMaggio Cup, the only thing they lack is the winning places: PIRogovo has one victory, Marussia none. In the interview after the first day, Marina was talking about whether her team can have stable performance on the high level. They could and they did. The new frontier, fourth position on the regatta, is taken. Congratulations! In the overall rankings, Marussia is quite high as well, on the 6place.
The fifth position on the MonteMaggio Cup is taken by Vadim Yakhinson’s Leviathan (Maxim Titarenko, Mikhail Sheremetyev, Evgenia Mikheitseva). They had a very steady and good regatta; only two races were not successful during it. That is the reason why Leviathan stayed in the fifth position and not higher. On the other hand, this team shouldn’t complain about their current results, since it allowed them to get something much bigger.
As we mentioned earlier, the battle for the third place in the overall rankings was between three teams: Valentin Zavadnikov’s and Matteo Tenti’s Synergy, Alexander Mikhaylik’s Alex Team and Leviathan. Leviathan won this battle and it’s a new step for the helmsman Vadim Yakhinson. Keep it up, guys!
Who won silver on the Dynamiq Yachts Melges 20 Monaco Winter Series? Victor. They were humble and quiet on the MonteMaggio Cup and were placed 7th. But they also became vice-champions of the whole series. Alexander Novoselov, Stefano Cherin and Egor Larionov became a team only in the beginning of winter 2016/2017, however, they found common language and aimed for victory quite fast. Without a doubt this team is a great finding and a surprise of this season.
We do not want to say it, but the winter season is over now.
See you in April in Porto Venere on the regatta of the European division of the Melges World League. The participants of the Dynamiq Yachts Melges 20 Monaco Winter Series will be playing leading roles there for sure!
