NZL 82 wins the Malmo regatta’s first big test

Emirates Team New Zealand met and mastered Luna Rossa at Malmo today, clearing the first major hurdle of the Louis Vuitton Act 6.

The weather today was sunny with a 14-16 knot breeze from the west. The water was flat.
First up was the much-anticipated match with Luna Rossa – the Prada of the 2000 and 2003 America’s Cup regattas – and like NZL 82 unbeaten At Malmo. At the same time the other unbeaten yachts in this regatta, Alinghi and BMWOracle, were racing against each other.

Whatever the outcome of these two races, one thing was certain: the number of syndicates at the top of the leaderboard would be halved. SUI 75 despatched USA 76 with a delta of 1min 29sec.

Both NZL 82 and SUI 75 won their second races of the day, so shared first place on the leaderboard after six races.

NZL 82 meets BMWOracle on Monday and Alinghi on Tuesday.

Today the team once again made up for what it lacks in boat speed with superb tactics and flawless crew work. On-course commentators again described NZL 82’s performance as “cool, calm and composed.”
The view from on board NZL 82 was somewhat less tranquil. “Prada made us work really hard for every metre of our margin and there was no way we were going to let it go. They chased us really hard and we were never comfortable even when we were three and four boat-lengths in front.” Grant Dalton said.

“One small mistake would have produced a different result…. but the afterguard got the calls right and the rest of the crew responded under pressure.”

At the start, NZL 82 took the left of the course and gained an early lead. It was never more than 10m and a small wind shift to the right gave Luna Rosa a lift and the lead changed. ITA 74 was slightly ahead at the first cross forcing NZL 82 to tack beneath them.
The lead changed several times in a few hundred metres, neither team giving anything awa. The turning point came when Dean Barker and his team forced ITA 74 to tack back to the right. It was probably the move that won the race. A wind shift to the left lifted NZL 82 and the crew painstakingly built a 60m lead, then rounded the first mark with a 16sec margin.

On the run ITA 74 chased all the way, with NZL 82 going through the gate 17sec ahead and taking the left of the course. ITA 74 went for the right. With the breeze oscillating through about 10deg, NZL 82 read it right, and extended the lead by 10sec at the third mark.
Luna Rossa was not about to give it way and pressed hard throughout the run and NZL 82 extended the lead by only 3se, finishing with a 30sec delta.

The second race of the day was against the previous day’s giant killers Shosholoza. On paper it should have been an easy race for NZL 82. And it was but the crew was taking nothing for granted and started hard and fast.
The margins told the story. NZL 82 won the start by 11sec, then 30sec at the first mark, 1min 2sec at the second mark, 1min 36sec at the third. RSA 83 had trouble hoisting the spinnaker on the second run and NZL 82 cruised to the finish with a margin of

Tomorrow NZL 82 is matched against K Challenge, sailing the yacht in which Team New Zealand successfully defended the cup in 2000, and the Italian +39 Challenge.
