Malmo August 28 2005
First loss of the regatta and the record is 7 wins from 8 races

NZL 82 made an unforced error in the pre-start of the second race today and it cost them a win, the first loss of the Malmo Louis Vuitton Act 6 regatta.

With four days of racing completed Emirates Team New Zealand now has a seven win - one loss record and is second on the leader board with Luna Rossa and BMW Oracle

It was the mistake that is almost inevitable in the high-pressure atmosphere of the America’s Cup but one the team has worked hard at avoiding – being over the line at the start.

Grant Dalton: “The starts are so important. Win the start and in most cases you’ve won the race. It puts a lot of pressure on the bow and afterguard to cross the line at full speed when the gun goes.

“As we showed today a slight misjudgment has disastrous consequences. By the time we had re-crossed the line we were 30sec behind +39.

“I was impressed with the way the team fought back. Twice we got within striking distance but the breeze favoured the Italians. On the final run we started to reel them in after we split gybes. Then as we fell into a hole, they got a breeze and opened the gap from 80m to almost 250m.”

“ITA 59 sailed a good race and they deserved the win. It was a race we should have won. We made a mistake and we were punished.”
By the time NZL 82 re-crossed the start line the race was 30sec old. ITA 59 was working the shifts and rounded the first mark with a 47sec advantage. On the run NZL 82 closed the gap to 26sec and on the second beat closed to within half a boat length.

Then the disappointment as ITA 59 got a shift and rounded the third mark 23sec ahead. On the run to the finish NZL 82 was looking good, advancing slowly at first then faster as they picked up the breeze.
But ITA 59 got a private puff and seemed to sail a couple of knots faster than NZL 82. The race finished with ITA 59 1min 6sec ahead.

In the first race of the day against the French K Challenge, NZL 82 won the start and quickly opened a two-boat length advantage that was extended to three to four lengths as the beat progressed.
At the first mark NZL 82 had a 39sec lead and after the run had extended to 1min 15sec. FRA 60 clawed back 8sec on the second beat and NZL 82 finished with a winning delta of 1min 12sec.

Tomorrow NZL 82 is matched first against Sweden’s Victory Challenge and then against BMW Oracle.
