The 32nd America’s Cup is coming to Italy
to conclude the 2005 racing season with the Trapani Louis Vuitton Acts 8 & 9. With three Italian teams and a large presence on Italian television, internet, and mobile phones, the racing in Trapani, Sicily is sure to be among the most memorable events of the year.
The three Italian teams, the +39 Challenge, Luna Rossa Challenge, and Mascalzone Latino-Team Capitalia are sure to be fighting hard to earn local bragging rights. In addition, at the conclusion of Act 9, the Louis Vuitton ACC Champion for 2005 will be crowned, so all 12 teams will be vying to end the year as strongly as possible.
Trapani, an ancient city on the extreme western tip of Italy’s largest island, Sicily, is an interesting choice of venue for America’s Cup racing. Although there is an extremely long maritime tradition in the area, grand prix yacht racing is new to the area.

The two race courses required for match racing will be placed in view of the shore, one to the North of the town and one to the West. Sailing conditions at this time of year will likely be dominated by sea breezes along with Autumnal depressions. Temperatures rarely drop below the mid-twenties, which is very comfortable for early October.
With the sea lapping at beaches on both sides of the town, Trapani has the Tyrennhien Sea to the North and to the South is the Middle Sea. Its geographic location means that all of the Mediterranean’s tuna fish pass by offshore at the beginning of the season when an ancient ritualistic fishing tradition is continued to this day. In fact, the Mediterranean has been a source of wealth throughout the history of Trapani, from the coral industry through to commercial fishing.
Although once Greek, Roman, Carthiginian, Spanish, this part of Sicily is today open to people of all nations through tourism and trade, the idyllic Egadi Islands lie just a few miles offshore whilst Tunisia and North Africa are just a few miles further over the horizon to the South West.
Walking down the streets of the oldest part of the city centre one can easily notice the influence of the various civilisations who have called this part of the world home. The town planning and architecture are a legacy left behind by all who have lived here before. Trapani, as with the America's Cup is a place where myth and history are firmly joined together, making it a perfect venue for the Louis Vuitton Acts 8 & 9.
