Mascalzone Latino-Capitalia Team goes to battle in Trapani
As they continue their road to the America’s Cup
Between the 29th of September and the 9th of October 2005, Mascalzone Latino-Capitalia Team will be racing in Trapani, Sicily, in Louis Vuitton Acts 8&9 as they continue preparing for the 2007 America’s Cup.
Mascalzone Latino ITA 77 will be sailed in the waters off of Sicily with the logo and name of banking group Capitalia, their index Sponsor, on it’s hull and sails.
The third stop in the 2005 European circuit, Acts 8&9 represent a new and unusual framework for the America’s Cup. The series of regattas began in Valencia, Spain, in June. In August, the series was continued in Malmo, Sweden. The events serve two purposes for the team of Vincenzo Onorato: to test the team against their adversaries and to allow the public more opportunities to experience the excitement of the America’s Cup.
“It’s a long two year journey,” says the Captain of the team, Vincenzo Onorato. “But the regatta in Trapani is an important moment for us because it will permit many Italians to enjoy first-hand the unique atmosphere of this competition.”
“Technology, sport, personal commitment: the America’s Cup is truly fascinating,” underlines Onorato. “And never before has it made a very strong impact on the media. We are trying to draft a new era that mixes the history, challenges, honor and pride of the event while bringing our team closer to the public and drawing more people to sailing.”
Initially named the 100 Guinea Cup and rebaptized the America's Cup in honor of the first boat to win, the trophy has been contested thirty two times. This is the first time the America's Cup contenders will race in Italian waters.
Mascalzone Latino-Capitalia Team is racing on behalf of the Reale Yacht Club Canottieri Savoia of Naples. The team is led by Vasco Vascotto, the skipper and tactician, and Flavio Favini, the helmsman.
