We are expanding our Italian family
In less than 24 hours we will have the start of the Louis Vuitton Acts 8&9 in Trapani. This will be the third and final stop in the 2005 European circuit.
“We’re approaching this regatta with a lot of enthusiasm,” -says Vascotto. “For us, this is the best regatta of the year because it is in Italy. We’ve got a lot of fans waiting.”
ML: What does it mean for you to be racing in Italy? Especially in Sicily?
VV: We have the feeling that we are at home. We have cappuccino in the morning and good pasta in the evening. We see people in the street and say “buongiorno” instead of “hi”. These are not small things to us. Usually we feel like gypsies travelling the world. To come home to race is giving us a great deal of pleasure and satisfaction. We want to sail well here and show that we have learned and improved and are achieving our objectives. This series is all about training and learning.
ML: An Italian team in Italian waters. Is it more opportunity or responsibility?
VV: It’s an incredible sporting and media opportunity. We want to do well and increase the number of sailing fans for the next America’s Cup.
ML: Do you think this regatta will be more challenging?
VV: Surely, yes. Everyone has learned during the series and this is the last stop. Among the Italian teams, we will want to show our fans who is the strongest among us.
ML: During recent weeks you have obtained important results. Will this serve you well in the Trapani regatta?
VV: Yes. Always. This past week we sailed against top-level skippers like Russell Coutts and John Kostecki. Winning 1st place in the Trans-Pac 52 circuit is very exciting and satisfying. It shows that we are a very competitive team.
ML: How has the reception from the locals been?
VV: Stupendous. We feel we have a responsibility to them to make them proud. This regatta is very important for us because we have the opportunity to expand our Italian family and carry with us their hearts.
