SAN FRANCISCO CUP – 2005

On behalf of the San Francisco Bay Folkboat Association, I am proud to announce that the Association will be sponsoring the 11th San Francisco Cup, to be held September 17-23, 2005. We are very excited here in San Francisco that this international regatta is once again being held, after a 6 year hiatus.

Der Yachthafen - östl. Golden Gate
We will have 20 competitive Folkboats on the line for the regatta. Our host club will be the San Francisco Yacht Club, across the Bay from San Francisco, in lovely Belvedere. The club is the oldest on the West Coast, and you can find more information about the club on their website - http://www.sfyc.org.

The San Francisco Yacht Club Race Committee has promised us a well run regatta, and we have asked them to hold the races in three different racing venues – the City Front, off San Francisco’s Crissy Field, the Knox course, between Angel Island, Alcatraz and Sausalito, and the Olympic Circle. The variety of locations will give visiting sailors a chance to experience all parts of beautiful San Francisco Bay.

Our plan is to hold opening ceremonies and draw for the boats on Saturday afternoon, September 17, with one practice race to be held on Sunday, September 18. Racing will be held on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, with dinner and awards ceremony to be held on Friday, September 23, at the club. Wednesday is a planned “lay day”, and an all day event will be planned for that day. We will also organize events during the evenings of the other races, for those who wish to participate.

As in years past, we will offer the hospitality of our homes to visiting Folkboaters and their families. In addition, there is a very affordable hostel in the Marin headlands, not far from the racing, but quite secluded and scenic, as it is located in a national recreation area (http://www.hostels.com/en/availability.php/HostelNumber.1841). There are, of course, other fine hotels located in San Francisco and on the Marin County side of the Bay, in Sausalito, Mill Valley, etc. We will assist all sailors with accommodations of their choice.

We have reserved 12 boats for visitors, and will allocate 8 to our local racers. Of the 12, we will allocate boats to the teams from each country in proportion to the number of entries received by December 31, and will guarantee at least one boat to each of the countries invited to participate - Sweden, Denmark, Germany, England, Finland and the Netherlands.

Information on the Regatta will be available on our Website (http://www.sfbayfolkboats.org), which will be updated regularly. We look forward to seeing our European Folkboat friends in San Francisco!
