MULTI CUP 60' : PROGRAMME 2007
Widely applauded as a total success in terms of sport, organisation and
media attention, the Multi Cup 60' 2006 season will be drawing to a close on
Sunday 10th September.
The circuit's management spent all summer building a European circuit (*)
which would be attractive, feature high performance criteria and open. A
zoom in on the new programme.
2 ocean races and 5 Grands Prix planned for 2007, leaving room of course for
the other major nautical events such as the America's Cup.
The wholle of the trimarn fleet entered in the Championship will start 2007
with a race from London to Marseille (12th May to 21st May). Once safely
docked in Marseille, the town is running the Trophée de Marseille, during
which a number of exhibition runs will be staged (24th to 26th May).
Next on the agenda, after the United Kingdom and France, is Spain. The
Balearic Islands will be hosting a Grand Prix, a first for Palma in Majorca
(14th to 17th June).
Then on to the south of Portugal, where the multis will once again be racing
in Portimao in the Algarve Grand Prix (12th to 15th July) marking the end of
the first part of 2007.
No sooner will the first section of the season have come to an end than the
town of Bordeaux will host the start of the second ocean race bound for
Stockholm in Sweden (28th July to 10th August). A Grand Prix will then be
taking place off the Swedish capital (16th to 19th August).

The 2007 Championship will be featuring a wide range of weather conditions
and extremely diverse courses, finishing of with the Grand Prix in the
north.
The host towns will all be putting on their glad drags for the sporting,
public and media potential offered by the presence of the 60' trimaran
fleet.
There are lots of discussions going on in the wings with the french and
northern Europe sponsors, skippers and event organisers bringing together
the trimarans so that the fleet increases to become 6-8 strong. A minimum of
6 boats and a fully-financed season in 2007 will guarantee the setting up of
the programme by the Multi Cup SAS.
Gabriel Brack, chairman of the Multi Cup SAS : « At the start of the
Londres-Alpes Maritimes race in May this year, nothing was certain. Ad hoc
teams were set up and I should like to thank them for the quality of their
work, commitment and results. We managed to attract and satisfy all of the
owners taking part in the Multi Cup Cafe Ambassador and we have established
links with the towns where « our » boats raced. They cannot wait to see us
race of their shore once again. Several long months of work lie ahead so
that we can transform this first trial run as it were. We're working hard
with the skippers, owners and financial partners without whom none of this
would have been possible. I should like to extend grateful thanks to our
official timekeeper Jaeger-LeCoultre, Cafe Ambassador and the Baron
Benjamin de Rothschild for their support ».
Denis Horeau, CEO of the Multi Cup Cafe Ambassador : « This first season has
been dense but wholly necessary to get the multihulls circuit up and running
as we wished. Owners and skippers affirm that the circuit matched
expectations. More international, greater public presence, and more media
coverage. In spite of the fact that we still need to find the backing and
increase the fleet, I am confident that this will fall into place. A great
thank you to the Baron Benjamin de Rothschild for having enabled us to
obtain the means in keeping with our ambitions this year. I also thank our
chairman Gabriel Brack and Café Ambassador, Jaeger-LeCoultre for their
degree of involvement and support for this class of boat which we hope to
see continue with determination, conviction and passion ».
Jean-Pierre Champion, chairman of the Fédération Française de Voile : « It
is clear that this year, the multihull circuit has had a new lease of life -
a great success. The challenge for the class is to be able to withstand its
inherent contradictions and demonstrate the determination to go beyond
certain interests. The class has benefited from exceptional commitment of
one person in particular and we really cannot thank him enough ».
Negotiations are underway with a number of financial partners for 2007. Make
a diary note for the Paris Boat Show (2nd-11th December 2006) where a press
conference will be held.
(*) The towns set out in the programme have agreed in principle to hosting a
start of finish of an ocean race or organising a Grand Prix. The programme
is almost certain, but is never the less subject to modification.
