sailors and guests.
Mike Slade commented: "Skandia Cowes Week is a fantastic regatta and
attracts some of the best boats in the world. It is wonderful to see
that in its 179th edition, it is still so popular and well supported. I
look forward to this regatta every year for its competitive racing and
unbeatable atmosphere. Here's to some great racing!"
Skandia Cowes Week is the largest regatta of its kind in the world, with
over 8,500 crew competing on over 1,000 yachts. The first Cowes Week was
held in 1826 and was organised by the Royal Yacht Squadron. The regatta
is now run by Cowes Combined Clubs, which was setup in 1964 specifically
to manage Cowes Week. Racing takes place on the Solent, the body of
water between indexland England and the Isle of Wight. Yachts competing
range from 30 metres in length, such as ICAP Leopard, down to around six
metres, such as the Laser SB3 class. The fleet will race in two separate
sailing areas in the Eastern and Western Solent, dependent on the
conditions and class of boat. The annual regatta reaches a climax on the
final Friday night, when organisers put on a fantastic fireworks display
watched by thousands of people both on land and on the water.
