The Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship 2009
to be held July 9th through 18th, 2009, at the city of Armação de Búzios, Rio de Janeiro state, Brasil, will be organized by the Rio de Janeiro State Sailing Federation together with the Confederação Brasileira de Vela e Motor (CBVM). The 2009 Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship is on course to be a record breaker with 59 nations and 280 sailors entered to compete in Buzios, Brazil from 9-18 July. The 39th edition of the Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship is the first to visit South America and the host city of Armação de Buzios is gearing up for a huge entry of top youth sailors from right around the world. The championship is part of a sailing-packed year in the Rio de Janeiro state, which also plays host to the Volvo Ocean Race, with the recent In-Port race won by the Telefonica Blue team and this Saturday’s start of leg six from Rio to Boston.

The 39th Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship is being hosted by Buzios, Brazil in the Bay of Buzios. The event will be organised by Rio de Janeiro State Sailing Federation (FEVERJ) in affiliation with the Confederação Brasileira de Vela e Motor (CBVM) under the authority of ISAF.

The ISAF Youth Worlds was first held in Sweden in 1971. The 2009 Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship will be the 39th championship.

Past notable winners include American's Cup skippers, Chris Dickson (NZL), Russell Coutts (NZL), Dean Barker (NZL); Olympic medallists, Robert Scheidt (BRA), Amelie Lux (GER), Ben Ainslie (GBR), Nick Rogers (GBR) and Siren Sundby (NOR); Volvo Ocean Race sailors like Stuart Bannatyne (NZL) and Richard Clarke (CAN)

Volvo support international youth sailing by sponsoring The Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championships. This assists young sailors with the development of their sailing careers whether it be focused on inshore Olympic dreams or the offshore challenges of the Volvo Ocean Race.

The International Sailing Federation (ISAF) is the world governing body for the sport of sailing.
ISAF is made up of over 120 Member National Authorities (MNAs), who are its principle members, and responsible for the decision making process that governs the sailing world.
There are currently more than 90 ISAF International, Recognized and Classic Yacht Classes, ranging from the smallest being the Optimist dinghy to the largest, the 60 foot multihull.
